Quirky House est arrivee

Well, here it is! The house I've been waiting for. And I'm not in the least bit disappointed by the details. However, here's the thing. And it's a bit of big 'thing'. This house is not in the most desirable part of Ipswich! It's right on the edge of the good bit of town, but it's on the edge.... On the same road as the YMCA and the halfway houses, the big houses that have been turned into lodgings and stuff, but there are plenty of residential houses too....but which way is it going to go, UP or DOWN? And, is it safe for my daughters? Safer than where we lived in London, or at least AS SAFE.

Had a long discussion with Andy about it tonight....we looked at the property that was available at the same price in the 'desirable' bit of town but you can't get half the house for this price....this house has enough scope for a gym, a cinema and a studio! The garden is enormous, and secluded. It doesn't need any work, it's set well back from the road....but..... Next week, I will take my camera along the road and take some pictures and post them on my blog...

Your decision as to where I lay my hat is important to me!

(Half of me thinks it's the bohemian end of town, where the artists/teachers/Quirky people live, and that appeals to me). So, we will go and see it (on Tuesday earliest) and make up our minds then....

wow, that's a really great house! hard to resist...could be you get it for a good price and down the road, when the area becomes even more desirable...you may have made some profit if ever you decided to sell...meanwhile you have fun with the bohemenians(sp?), as long as the girls are safe and feel safe...

looks really lovely. Quirky and bohemian sounds good to me!

And as M. says, that garden is verging on "grounds", isn't it?

Talk to everyone about the area and find out what they think, everybody you know, bore them rigid with questions. Where we live was a bit like that 15 years ago and it's very expensive now and all the houses that were multiple occupancy have been bought and done up and are now family homes, so it could be a good move, but you want to feel happy ambling about in the neighbourhood and you want good neighbours.
But it is a wonderful house. So do your homework on the area and prowl around it at various times of day.
I hate decisions like that. Good luck!

Glad you're still feeling quirky though - I guess if it is quirky it must be for you, really.

Thanks for all that advice.

Ipswich is an 'up and coming' place - and things are moving VERY fast - especially in the docks area where new flats are going up all over the shop. Old wonderful buildings in the centre of town are also being converted into flats. After all it's only one house from London, so they are tapping into that market. On this road that the house is one, you can walk into town and at one end of the road there are lots of shops - but they are ethnic grocery stores mainly (lebanese, portugeuse, bangladeshi, Russian (!), curry houses. But there is one very well established and thriving large department store. Some of the big houses on the road have big signs on saying they are soon to be developed and another large mansion type was an NHS place but has now closed down so might be about to be developed or sold. My book group friend Ruth lives on that road and couldn't sell her house recently but she did live right next to a house which housed 'problem families'. She says she's never had any problems, has nice neighbours and enjoys living there. THey were just selling to down size and pay off their mortgage.

So who knows...it might not have the quiet, safe, leafy feel of the 'Christchurch Park Area' - it has a bit more 'edge'. I don't know,we'll go see on Tuesday and take photos, lots of!

Thanks everyone...

Well, I've been a clever girl and phoned the YMCA directly and talked to the Chief Executive of that particular Y. He tells me that in 13 years of his being in charge he's only ever had one incident of one of his residents committing a crime on his doorstep so to speak. He also tells me that the large empty house three doors down is going to be a local authority building running classes, it will also have community police station there on site.... However, I asked him candidly what he thought about us moving onto this road and he said, 'if you are looking for quiet and solitude you won't get that because of the young men having their windows open and playing music etc in the summer'. But as far as crime is concerned...very little he says.

Oh yes, it's got everything you would want!

How far to the girls schools? And the train stop for A?

How fars to the nearest bus stop for when holly goes to friends on her own or into town...down the shops?

Who are the immediate neighbours....and how long have they lived there?
Turn over is offen a good clue. If its a bad place people move on regularly.

You did really well on your Charlton house, so you must have good instincts! Good luck!

It looks really lovely. Just go and see what you think. You'll 'know' in your heart if it is for you. In fact, you'll probably know as you walk up the drive.

T came into work last night (remember the BT) and we were talking about you. I was saying how wonderful you looked when I saw you. She agreed, saying you are very striking. Do you need any groupies?
